Packaging machinery has evolved alongside the emergence of new packaging materials and continuous innovations in packaging technology. China’s historically groundbreaking invention of papermaking laid the groundwork for the development of paper-based packaging.

In 1850, global paper prices plummeted, prompting the use of paper packaging for food products. In 1852, Wally in the United States invented the paper bag machine, marking the emergence of machinery for producing paper-based goods. By 1861, Germany had established the world's first packaging machinery factory, and by 1911, it was already manufacturing fully automatic form-fill-seal machines.

China's packaging machinery industry started relatively late, but after more than 20 years of development, it has become one of the top ten sectors within the country's broader machinery industry. This growth has provided a strong foundation for the rapid expansion of China's packaging industry. Moreover, some of these packaging machines have even filled domestic gaps, enabling the industry to largely meet the demands of the Chinese market—and certain products are now being exported as well.

China's export value of packaging machinery accounts for less than 5% of its total production value, while imports are roughly equivalent to the country's total output—far behind developed nations. From a product structure perspective, China’s packaging machinery industry offers just over 1,300 different models, with limited supporting components and a notable absence of high-precision, large-scale products, making it difficult to meet market demands. Moreover, product quality lags significantly, as evidenced by poor performance, inadequate stability and reliability, unappealing designs, and rough surface finishes. Many components also suffer from inferior quality, leading to shorter lifespans and reduced overall product reliability. On the business front, China’s packaging machinery sector lacks dominant industry leaders; there are few enterprises that operate on a large scale or produce high-end, premium-quality products. Finally, in terms of product development, China remains largely stuck at the stage of testing and imitation, with weak capabilities for independent innovation. The country also lacks dedicated research-and-development facilities for pilot-scale production, and R&D spending accounts for only 1% of sales revenue—compared to 8% to 10% in many developed countries.

China's packaging machinery technology lags behind the overall technological level of developed countries by 20 years, placing it at a competitive disadvantage in areas such as product development, performance, quality, reliability, and customer service.

Under the backdrop of continuous development, the packaging industry—particularly the packaging machinery sector—is rife with contradictions. Companies are struggling to keep pace with rapidly changing market dynamics, as their industry-wide mindset and strategic approaches fail to align with evolving trends. At the same time, innovation capabilities remain weak, hindering progress in advanced manufacturing technologies. As a result, new product development continues to rely heavily on imitation and incremental improvements rather than groundbreaking, forward-thinking initiatives. Consequently, competitive strength remains limited, and economic growth—and even efficiency gains—continue to depend primarily on expanding scale rather than fostering true innovation or differentiation.

Additionally, there are still instances of loose management practices in packaging machinery enterprises, with refined management yet to be fully implemented. Many companies also lack a strong sense of market awareness, competitive spirit, and risk consciousness, resulting in weak focus on serving both the market and their customers, as well as a limited sense of urgency and responsibility toward growth. Furthermore, some packaging machinery firms exhibit mismatches between their understanding of human resources and how they are utilized, failing to align with the fundamental principles of the market economy.

Faced with unfavorable factors, it is urgent to transform the development approaches of companies across the packaging machinery industry. Businesses must reassess and effectively address the existing contradictions and challenges from a fresh perspective, shifting their development mindset, strengthening independent innovation, enhancing market awareness, and vigorously driving the growth of China's domestic packaging machinery sector.

To transform the current state of the packaging machinery industry and drive its growth, the industry must keep a close eye on emerging trends in packaging machinery development as it moves forward with confident strides.

With the continuous advancement of science and technology and the emergence of various food processing products, new demands have been placed on both packaging technologies and packaging equipment. As a result, packaging machinery is playing an increasingly significant role in the distribution sector.

Packaging machinery competition is intensifying, with highly automated, intelligent, multifunctional, high-efficiency, and low-consumption packaging equipment increasingly favored by the industry.

The degree of automation in manufacturing processes is steadily increasing. Automation technology now accounts for more than 50% of packaging production lines, with extensive use of computer-aided design and mechatronic control systems. This has led to higher productivity, greater equipment flexibility, and enhanced maneuverability, while the integration of robotic arms enables the execution of complex packaging tasks with precision and efficiency.

Each robotic arm is controlled by a separate computer, while cameras monitor the packaging process and feed real-time data back to the computers to fine-tune the movements, ensuring consistent packaging quality. Soon, packaging machinery is set to become a driving force behind an emerging industry. Leading countries in advanced packaging and food machinery technology include the United States, Germany, Japan, Italy, and the United Kingdom, among others.
