A Review of Packaging Machinery

Packaging machinery has evolved alongside the emergence of new packaging materials and the continuous innovation

Packaging machinery has evolved alongside the emergence of new packaging materials and the continuous innovation of packaging technologies.

China invented papermaking technology, historically creating the conditions for the development of paper packaging.

In 1850, global paper prices plummeted, leading to the widespread use of paper packaging for food.

In 1852, F. Lee of the United States invented the paper bag machine, marking the emergence of paper product machinery.

In 1861, Germany established the world's first packaging machinery factory, and by 1911, it had produced a fully automatic form-fill-seal machine.

In 1890, the U.S. began manufacturing liquid filling machines, and by 1902, gravity-fed filling machines were also introduced.

In the early 20th century, Britain's P. Durand pioneered the use of metal containers for food preservation, leading to the emergence of a wide variety of canned food products.

Since the 1960s, new materials have gradually replaced traditional packaging materials—and particularly after the widespread adoption of plastic packaging—major transformations have occurred in packaging machinery. Meanwhile, the rise of supermarkets has introduced increasingly sophisticated demands on product packaging.

To ensure fast and safe product delivery, containers were introduced, and their dimensions have gradually become standardized and standardized into series, further driving the advancement and refinement of packaging machinery.
